France’s upper house of parliament has rejected last-minute cuts to research and higher education for 2015.
The Senate voted against the cuts on 3 December, rejecting the National Assembly’s proposal to reduce funding for higher education and university research by €70 million and for research organisations by €35m.
According to a Senate spokeswoman, the 2015 budget will now go back to the National Assembly, the country’s lower house of parliament, to be finalised by 18 December. A researchers’ protest is planned for 11 December, as the budget is considered to be a blow to French research even without the assembly’s proposed cuts.
