Public-private energy lab agreed

Inria, France’s digital technology research institute, has teamed up with steam turbine manufacturer Alstom to create a joint research laboratory focused on simulations for energy distribution and mobility.

Researchers at the laboratory will work on developing digital technologies to monitor and coordinate energy supply and usage in transport. The partners, who agreed on 7 April to work on the initiative for an initial five years, will fund 20 scientists and engineers to work at the lab.

Michel Cosnard, chief executive of Inria, said the scientific support from Alstom would help France break through existing technological barriers in energy monitoring. The research results are expected to improve services in the energy market and help save energy in transport, he said.
