Valls wants positive approach to business R&D

France’s prime minister Manuel Valls has promised to increase support for business innovation and research in his first policy statement to the French parliament.

Valls said that more R&D at small businesses and artisan companies, as well as at bigger firms, could boost France’s ailing economy. “We will act to encourage companies to support research and innovation,” he told parliament. “Initiate, create, take risks, hire—this is the positive approach that I want to encourage, because it is good for our country.”

Valls was appointed prime minister on 31 March after Jean-Marc Ayrault resigned in the wake of the socialist party’s heavy losses in the 2014 municipal elections.
