France’s national research centre is to focus on responding to societal challenges over the next four years, according to a draft of the CNRS's plans for 2014-18.
A draft copy of the strategic objectives document was published on 23 February by the SNCS researcher’s union, which was asked to contribute to discussions about priorities for the CNRS.
Christophe Blondel, treasurer for the SNCS, said the focus on societal challenges was a surprise. “Researchers have been working on all these problems for years, they didn’t wait to be asked,” he said.
