Debates over free speech continue at universities

French higher education institutions are organising events for researchers, lecturers and students to debate French secularity, religion and terrorism, following the January terrorist attacks in Paris.

On 2 February, the French students’ union UNEF hosted a debate on French republican values and the growing concerns over racism in France. Jean-Louis Salzman, head of the CPU, France’s association of university presidents, said universities were leading the fight against intolerance.

University of Lorraine researchers also discussed the attacks and called for more knowledgeable experts to be interviewed in the media. Roger Pouivet, a professor in philosophy at the university, said that following the events, he mostly heard "people with very limited competencies" speak about the issue, even though leading academics were available.
