Government misses deadline for budget meeting

France’s national council for higher education and research has condemned the government for further delay in revealing details of cuts to be made to university budgets.

The CNESER passed a motion on 23 February denouncing the ministry of higher education and research’s attitude to reviewing university budgets, after the latest deadline for a meeting between the government and the council had passed.

On 14 February, the higher education and research secretariat sent a letter to the council stating that it needed more time to analyse the budget properly. The government was initially scheduled to meet the council in December to review planned cuts, but delayed this first to 19 January, then to 23 February, and now for an additional length of time with no date announced.
