Protests against budget cuts step up

Academics in France are increasing pressure on the government in opposition to its decision to cut €100 million from the 2015 higher education budget.

The CPU, France’s association of university presidents, Cdefi, which represents France’s engineering schools, and CGE, which represents France’s grande ecoles, published a joint statement on 16 February calling for the higher education budget to be preserved.

Before it announces the allocation of university spending for 2015, the French government wants to reduce the working capital of higher education institutions. But the organisations state: "The principle of the proposed levy falls in complete opposition to the national strategy for higher education."
