Geneviève Fioraso has resigned from her post as secretary of state for research, the French government has announced.
In an interview published by the regional newspaper Le Dauphiné Libéré on 6 March, the day after her resignation, Fioraso was quoted as saying the decision was due to health reasons. “My health condition is incompatible with a ministerial role. I manage a €23-billion budget, for over 200 institutions. To do this well, one has to be in good shape and on the ground,” she said, adding that the decision to leave office was “heart-wrenching”.
Fioraso was appointed minister for higher education and research in 2012, in the first centre-left government of François Hollande’s administration. Two years later, her role was downgraded to state secretary as part of a government reshuffle, with Najat Vallaud-Belkacem becoming minister for higher education and research.
