Investments programme should run again, says commissioner

Louis Schweitzer, a former chief executive of the car firm Renault, has called for a third wave of France's PIA programme for investments in the future of research and innovation.

Schweitzer, the French government’s general commissioner for investment, said he was “favourable” to the idea of a third phase of the programme starting in 2017, according to the news website L’Etudiant.

The public investment programme received €35 billion under the previous administration in 2010, and €12bn in 2013, mostly to support the commercialisation of research, and major projects such as the development of the Astrid nuclear reactor. The third phase should distribute about €10bn more in public money, Schweitzer suggested. For this to happen, he said, budget allocations should be discussed this year and approved in 2016.
