France’s PhD numbers slide again

The number of doctoral students at French universities has fallen for the sixth year in a row, according to provisional statistics for 2014-15 released by the government.

The figures, released on 22 April, show that the number of doctoral students dropped by 2.4 per cent between 2013-14 and 2014-15, to 60,300 people.

However, the number of students enrolled on bachelors and masters courses increased. There were 1.5 million students at French universities on 15 January 2015, up by 1.2 per cent on the number measured at the end of 2013-14.
