François Fillon, the Republican contender for the French presidency, has pledged to move France towards an evaluation-based higher education and research model similar to the UK’s if he wins next year’s election.
Fillon won the Republican Party’s nomination in the runoff on 27 November, beating former prime minister Alain Juppé by winning 66.5 per cent of the vote. He will now run for president against candidates from rival parties, including the far-right National Front (FN)leader Marine Le Pen.
Fillon, who was prime minister between 2007 and 2012 in Nicolas Sarkozy’s government, was expected to be eliminated in the first round of the Republican Party’s election on 20 November, but instead emerged as the leader. Sarkozy was eliminated in the first round.
