The Guiana Space Centre is set to receive an extra €10 million of French public funds over the next two years.
The extra money will come from CNES, France’s national space research agency. It will form part of a package to boost investment in the spaceport, which is used by French and European space missions. The increased investment means that CNES will spend about €50m on the centre before the end of 2020.
Frédérique Vidal, the research minister, and Annick Girardin, minister for overseas territories, outlined the plan in a joint statement on 11 December. They said they intended to refocus investment in the space centre on longer-term structural projects, and involve local government bodies in decision-making to a greater extent.
