French MPs have amended a higher education bill so that doctoral students’ annual subscription fees would increase by €69, which is €60 less than originally planned.

Christine Cloarec and Gabriel Attal, two MPs from president Emmanuel Macron’s party La République en Marche, amended a bill overhauling university entry so that doctoral fees would rise from €396 to only €465 for the 2018-19 academic year.

In a statement on 13 December, the CJC young researchers’ confederation, which lobbied against the increase, said that the amendment was a positive sign, but added that it would continue to campaign against even the smaller increase.
