France brushes off Shanghai rankings stagnation

Frédérique Vidal, the minister for higher education and research, has said French institutions would “very significantly” improve their positions in university rankings if partnerships known as Comues were included in evaluations.

Vidal promised to put pressure on rankings organisations to consider French university partnerships as single entities in a statement on 15 August—the same day as the 2017 Shanghai university rankings was published.

This year, 20 French universities were placed among the top 500 in the Shanghai rankings, two fewer than in 2016. In the country-by-country classification, France maintained its eighth place, behind Canada and ahead of Japan.
