The neuroscientist controversially appointed scientific adviser to the French education minister has downplayed the influence of his field in the advisory council that he leads.
Stanislas Dehaene, a professor of cognitive neuroscience at the Collège de France, said that neuroscience “is not central” to the government’s scientific advisory council on education, in an interview on the France Inter radio station on 11 January.
Dehaene’s appointment as chairman of the council, which was established on 10 January, provoked strong reactions from many education researchers when it was announced in November. More than 50 researchers signed a petition objecting to Dehaene’s appointment, saying that it illustrated the favouritism being given to neuroscience over other fields of research in education.
