University presidents clamour for more freedom

The CPU, France’s association of university presidents, has said that higher education should be given more freedom from central government management.

French universities will not be able to keep up with their international competitors if they are not granted more autonomy from government, the CPU said in a statement on 21 May.

Reforms begun in 2007 to give universities more autonomy have been effective, but now is the time for the government to go much further, the association said.
