Medical researchers call time on pesticide use

No more research on the effects of pesticide use on human health is needed for a full ban to be justified, a group of senior French medical researchers has said.

In a letter to the newspaper Le Monde published on 4 June, the 29 researchers said enough evidence on the health effects of pesticides had built up that “an urgent cessation of the massive pesticide use” is now warranted.

The scientists—who include several research leaders at the CNRS, France’s largest public research organisation, and Inserm, the national agency for health research—were responding to an earlier letter in Le Monde from a group of scientists calling for greater funding for research to nourish the debate on pesticide use.
