Cédric Villani, a mathematician and MP, is reportedly set to launch a campaign to become mayor of Paris in 2020 despite his party choosing another candidate as nominee.

Villani has called a press conference for the evening of 4 September, at which he is widely expected to announce his candidacy for the mayoral election due to be held in March 2020.

He sought the mayoral nomination of La République En Marche!, the political party founded by France’s president Emmanuel Macron, but the party’s selection committee chose Benjamin Griveaux in July. In a long letter to LREM members published on the Medium website on 2 September, Griveaux said he regretted Villani’s likely decision to stand against him and that Villani had not responded to his suggestion to collaborate in the mayoral campaign.
