Minister announces pay rise for junior researchers

But unions and protesters say increase is not enough to make lasting difference

Early-career researchers in France could see their pay grow by €2,600 a year from 2021, after France’s research minister Frédérique Vidal presented extra funding for such a purpose.

The announcement, made last week, is music to the ears of young researchers in the country, who have long complained about low pay and precarious contracts. Putting €118 million of extra funding on the table, Vidal said that academic staff just starting their career would be the priority.
