Investments in Future programme promises billions for research

French government announces €20bn for fourth iteration of PIA, including a coronavirus recovery fund

The fourth round of the French government’s Investments in the Future (PIA 4) programme, which launched last week, will spend €20 billion on research between now and 2026.

Out of the total funding under the programme, around €11bn will be spent as part of France’s coronavirus recovery plan, to be expended by the end of 2022. This means that just over 10 per cent of the recovery plan’s entire budget will go towards innovation and research.
