More than 50% of French scholarly papers are ‘free’

Steep year-on-year rise in open-access science articles, with maths leading the scoreboard

More research papers by French academics are being published in open-access journals than in paid-for publications, France’s Open Science Barometer (BSO) has revealed.

According to the 2020 edition of the BSO, released last week, 56 per cent of the 156,000 French scholarly publications published in 2019 were available to read on some kind of open-access basis in December 2020.
