Astronomers rejoice at news of French intentions after a decade of indecision

France has expressed a wish to become a full member of the Square Kilometre Array Observatory Council (SKAO), the body tasked with constructing and operating the world’s largest radio astronomy facility.

The SKAO, which will eventually become the governing body of the Square Kilometre Array telescope, was formally founded on 4 February 2021, replacing a provisional organisation. The SKA has been given intergovernmental organisation status, having been ratified on 16 December 2020 with backing from the UK.
