National funder rejects demand to investigate issue, while researchers call for minister’s resignation

Frédérique Vidal, France’s minister of higher education, research and innovation, is facing a growing backlash after asking the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) to conduct a survey of what she called “Islamo-leftism” at universities.

The request was made on live TV last week, when Vidal demanded a probe into Islamo-leftism, an alleged nexus between Islamism and left-wing politics, which, she said, had become more common in higher education. Vidal said the purpose of the survey would be to understand the presence and impact of the issue at universities, and distinguish between academic research and “militancy and opinion”.
