French polar institute to get €3m to keep heating on

Money will be among first payouts from government emergency fund

Sylvie Retailleau, the minister for higher education and research, has promised an extra €3 million for the Polar Institute Paul-Émile Victor (IPEV) in 2023 to help it cope with rising energy costs.

The extra money was previously included in an amendment to the government’s draft budget for next year, but was taken out when, on 19 October, prime minister Élisabeth Borne invoked an article in the French constitution that enabled the government to force its budget legislation through without using the usual parliamentary channels.
