Macron aims to boost French polar research with €1bn pledge

      

Polar ship and floating research station among items on president’s wish list

France’s president has promised €1 billion, to be spent by 2030, to reinvigorate the country’s research missions in polar regions.

The figure pledged by Emmanuel Macron exceeds the €400 million to €700m that a polar research strategy roadmap published in April 2022 said was necessary. It also represents an increase on the €500m spent on polar research in the period 2017-23.
