Dig into your savings to fund pay rises, Retailleau tells universities

Cost of civil service salary hike will be only partially met by government, minister warns

Pay rises for civil servants tabled by the government in June, which include most of the higher education and research workforce, will not be fully met by the French treasury, higher education and research minister Sylvie Retailleau has said.

Speaking at a conference organised by France Universités, the country’s representative body for university presidents, on 30 August, Retailleau said: “I will be honest and clear, the budget of our ministry, even if increased, will not cover all of these measures [to raise civil service pay], neither in 2023 nor in 2024,” higher education news website EducPros reported.
