Draft budget delivers €1bn uplift for research and universities

But no mention of extra cash to help universities pay for salary hikes

France’s overall spending on higher education and research will be raised by €1 billion in 2024, according to a draft budget presented by finance minister Bruno Le Maire.

Unlike in previous years, the plans, which were presented on 27 September and need to be approved by parliament, put the government’s total forecast spending on higher education and research—including that allocated to other ministries—front and centre. The 2024 draft budget assigns €31.6bn to this multi-ministerial allocation, which is recorded as €1bn more than for 2023.
