X-ray mission ends in controlled satellite destruction

Germany’s research satellite ROSAT, which spent its life taking infrared images of stars, entered the atmosphere on 23 October in a controlled burn-out, ending the mission.

The German Aerospace Centre confirmed that the satellite burned out over the Gulf of Bengal. It is not known yet whether parts of it have reached Earth’s surface.
