North Rhine-Westphalia is to launch a programme under which universities have a chance of receiving extra funding for excellence in teaching, research and equality, it was announced on 16 December.
The €520 million programme will start on 1 January 2012. The money, nearly one quarter of the North Rhine-Westphalian universities’ annual income, will be given to higher education institutions based on performance, rather than being guaranteed.
