Researcher bags prize for hearing aid advances

A hearing researcher has won this year’s pan-German prize for science that will have a lasting impact in its field.

Birger Kollmeier of the University of Oldenburg won the Zukunftspreis for his work on improving hearing problem diagnosis and the improvement of hearing aids. Kollmeier has developed a cheap way of producing hearing aids that allow for stereo hearing, making high-quality hearing aids affordable for the general public, according to the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), Germany’s largest research funder.
