Volkswagen pays for small-town professorships

The Volkswagen Foundation has made €8.5 million available to fund professorships at the universities of Bayreuth, Bonn, Bremen, Greifswald, Mainz and Oldenburg.

The professors were selected for the foundation’s Lichtenberg-Professur programme, which allows internationally renowned researchers to set up professorial posts at the winning universities. The programme is targeted at small and medium-sized higher education institutions, and is meant to give them a change to achieve international recognition.
