Germany embraces bachelor and master degrees

Ten years after their introduction, master and bachelor degrees are well established in Germany and account for 85 per cent of university courses in the country, according to the research ministry.

The bachelor/master system was introduced in Germany on 15 August 2002 as part of the Bologna Process for higher education reform in Europe. Under this system students are required to complete their university studies in 3-4 years. It replaced a previous diploma system, in which students had no fixed time schedule in which to complete their degree.
