Autonomy law up for debate

A law that would revamp Baden-Württemberg’s university leadership and give institutions more freedom in research is under discussion in the state’s government.

Voting on the law, a draft of which was published last month, will take place on 28 November. The proposal covers governance, funding and strategic development in higher education.

One of the clauses is aimed at improving prospects for early-career researchers by helping universities to create more tenure-track positions. Universities would also be liable for tightening PhD quality control and improving mentoring for doctoral students.
