Network for working-class students funded

The government of Schleswig-Holstein has awarded €50,000 to a project aimed at getting more working-class students into academia and science.

The Arbeiterkind project is an organisation created by students from working-class families who felt they lacked support specific to their needs. Students whose parents have not been to university are mentored by the organisation and provided with career planning and support.

The funding will help the organisation to set up a regional office at the Christian-Albrecht University of Kiel. Rolf Fischer, the state’s secretary for science, said the money would give the project a long-term perspective.
