Skyrocketing student numbers prompt call for help

Record student numbers for the sixth year in a row have caused the HRK, Germany's union of rectors, to issue an urgent request for more government funding.

Institutions are struggling to provide quality education because the number of incoming students is far beyond what was estimated when university budgets were last decided, according to Horst Hippler, the HRK’s president.

“This continuous strain is starting to affect the core of higher education institutions,” Hippler said. “Such institutions need better and more sustainable funding. The Hochschulpakt needs to be extended and basic funding needs to be increased during the next government period.”
