Nine construction projects at higher education institutions have been selected for funding by the Wissenschaftsrat, the science council of the German government, in order to boost the country's academic research capacity.
The funding is intended to improve research capacity and quality at the chosen institutions. The money will mainly go towards the construction of research laboratories in the life sciences and medicine. The University of Heidelberg, however, has won funding to construct a new home for its Centre for Asian and Transcultural Studies.
The money will come from both the federal government and the states in which the projects are located. According to a statement from the research ministry of North Rhine-Westphalia, the total amount expected to be paid out in 2014 is around €290 million.
