Construction has started on a €110-million facility for research into neurodegenerative diseases in Bonn, which is expected to house more than 500 staff.
The centre is funded jointly by the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia, which contributed 77 per cent of the funding, and the German government, which paid for the rest. Construction is expected to be finished in late 2015. Research at the centre will include looking at Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and other diseases that affect the brain and nervous system.
The centre is part of the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases, the DZNE. The DZNE is a countrywide network of research centres, which employs around 700 scientists. Of these, around 330 are already working in Bonn.
