The government’s 2013 spending on public research and innovation is set to reach €14.4 billion by the end of the year, according to the latest data released by Germany's research ministry.
The record figure covers all funds going to research and innovation projects across all government ministries, said Johanna Wanka, the German research minister. The research ministry itself will pay out €8.3bn of the total.
“Germany has become the technology and innovation engine of Europe thanks to our spending on R&D,” said Wanka. “We need to continue down this road, because innovation creates future growth and wealth.”
