Funding competition selects first MOOCs

A total of 10 massive open online courses have been selected for funding by the Stifterverband, the association of German research funders, to boost distance learning.

Each course will receive €25,000 to get started by autumn this year, the Stifterverband announced. The money is intended to improve the concepts and contents of MOOCs, and create more diversity between the courses on offer.

The Stifterverband’s competition, which ended on 10 June, attracted more than 250 applications from 20 countries. The selected courses cover broad topics, such as geometry, governance and planning for change, as well as specialised subjects including crystal structures, DNA therapy and storytelling.
