North Rhine-Westphalia’s science minister Svenja Schulze has said that rectors’ salaries in the state are fair, after data on remuneration in higher education were leaked to the press.
In an address to the state’s science council, Schulze said that “neither the level of remuneration, nor the increases, are unfair. But it must be very painful to have this implied.”
The minister added that she was angry about the leaking of confidential data as it had affected ongoing negotiations about a higher education law in the state. She said that rectors were not earning much more than they did as professors, and that it was important to offer competitive salaries to get the best people for top-level jobs.
