Germany’s rectors have teamed up with colleagues in France and Poland to issue a list of topics that should be addressed by candidates during the European elections.
The seven topics focus on the politics and funding of higher education in Europe, including issues such as progress of the European Research Area, innovation funding and autonomy. The list was released jointly by the HRK union of German rectors, the CPU group of French rectors and Poland’s Krasp group of rectors.
The foremost demand is for an explanation from candidates of how European funding for higher education and research is expected to develop in the coming years. This issue is particularly pressing as the European Parliament has failed to deliver on its promise of increasing spending on the Framework programme to €100 billion; the final budget deal for Horizon 2020 is €70.2bn.
