University law goes live

The German state of Baden-Württemberg has adopted a revised higher education law to give universities more autonomy.

The law, which has been in the works since February 2013, is expected to result in more tenure track positions and more funding for collaboration between universities. Higher education institutions will now also have the right to set up interdisciplinary research centres separate from their faculties without needing government approval.

The revised law is intended to make universities in the state more competitive by encouraging them to improve their research performance and engage in more collaboration.
