Marit Hansen, the data-protection representative for the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein, has questioned the potential uses of data collected by Coursera, an American provider of massive open online courses.
In the first week of December, the Süddeutsche Zeitung, the Tagesschau website and Spiegel Online reported on the collaboration between Coursera, the Technical University of Munich and the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.
Coursera’s terms and conditions state that, in the United States, the provider can allow recruiters to retrieve student data. This data can be used “for all possible purposes”, Spiegel Online and the Tagesschau website reported Hansen as saying.
