Extra funds for universities of applied science

North Rhine-Westphalia has increased funding for its universities of applied science, in order to create more study places.

The state’s government announced last week that it aims to create more than 3,400 extra study places at applied universities by 2020. Institutions will get €480 million under the state’s FEP programme, which focuses on the development of such universities.

Universities of applied science in the state have increasingly complained about a lack of basic funding, which means they have to use research project funding to pay for basic needs such as rent, heating and maintenance. North Rhine-Westphalia is also struggling to offer its students enough space at universities.
