City sustainability lab planned

The government of Baden-Württemberg has awarded €8 million to a laboratory that will bring together researchers and city dwellers.

The Reallabor Stadt initiative aims to involve citizens in scientific work to improve local resilience and address urban challenges, the state’s research ministry said. As well as aiming to improve transport and energy supply, the initiative will tackle issues in the social sciences, such as dealing with cultural diversity and changing demographics.

“Many societal challenges are especially visible in cities,” said the state’s research minister Theresia Bauer. “Cities are laboratories of the future, because they are where science, communities and industry can develop joint solutions.”
