Germany’s national association of rectors has teamed up with colleagues from across Europe to warn that proposed cuts to Horizon 2020 will affect the image of EU research.
The HRK issued a joint statement last week, together with counterparts in France, the Netherlands and the UK, to say that a plan to divert €2.7 billion from Horizon 2020 to a European Fund for Strategic Investments would endanger research across the continent.
The investment fund, designed by the European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker, is intended to encourage private investment to boost the European economy. But the rectors said that the cuts could backfire and create uncertainties about EU research spending.
