Academics rally to support Turkish peers

More than 3,000 academics in Germany have signed a petition in support of Turkish scholars who have been accused of putting their names to “terrorist propaganda”.

The petition—No Repression for the Academics Calling for Peace in Turkey—was initiated two weeks ago by Christine Huth-Hildebrandt, a professor at Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, and Gazi Çağlar, a political scientist at the HAWK university of applied sciences in Hildesheim. The petition was reported in an article published on 21 January in Spiegel Online.

In a statement accompanying the petition, Huth-Hildebrandt and Çağlar express solidarity with the 1,128 Turkish academics whom the state is investigating for signing a petition that called for an end to the “deliberate massacres and deportations of Kurdish and other people” in Kurdish areas of south-east Turkey.
