Volkswagen cheat device ‘compliant with European law’

The German car manufacturer Volkswagen has claimed that the software it used to cheat emissions tests did not violate European law.

Volkswagen is toughening its legal defences in anticipation of a rise in compensation claims in Europe, the news agency Reuters reported on 3 November.

The manufacturer has so far rejected the European Commission’s calls to compensate registered Volkswagen owners in Europe, but has offered cash payouts to drivers in the United States. The company has denied that it breached European consumer rules and told Reuters that its cheat device was legal in Europe.
