200 institutions set to lose Elsevier access

Some of the most prestigious institutions in Germany look set to lose access to the content of Elsevier journals, as the new year approaches with no nationwide deal in place.

The Project Deal team, which has been trying to negotiate a nationwide deal with Elsevier for over a year, confirmed on 6 December that no agreement had been reached over continued access for the German institutions that have refused to extend their existing contracts beyond the end of 2017.

“There is no transition or extension planned at the moment,” a spokeswoman told Times Higher Education. “About 200 institutions have cancelled their contracts with Elsevier, which means that they won’t have institutional access to the content.”
