German foundation under fire in Russia

The Moscow branch of Germany’s Friedrich-Ebert Foundation is in danger of being shut down because of a student speech, according to media reports.

The foundation, which is affiliated to the social-democratic SPD party and provides student and doctoral research grants, has been accused of writing a speech that was read out by Nikolay Desyatnichenko in Germany’s Bundestag on 19 November.

According to an article published by the Deutsche Welle news website on 21 December, the teenager’s speech about how moved he was by the story of a German Wehrmacht soldier who died in the second world war has been labelled “treason” and “unpatriotic pity” in Russia.
